On Wed., Oct 15, the World Food Prize convenes its 2014 Borlaug Dialogue, an international symposium that brings together leaders from around the world in Des Moines, Iowa. This year, the Dialogue is addressing, The Greatest Challenge in Human History: Can We Sustainably Feed the 9 Billion People on Our Planet by Year 2050?
The 2014 Borlaug Centennial Laureate is Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram.
Discussion topics will include:
- Taking stock of where we currently stand in meeting the “greatest challenge in human history”;
- Closing yield gaps while addressing pressing water, gender and nutrition challenges and disparities;

A highlight on Thursday, Oct. 16, is the awarding of the 40 Chances Fellowships – the special initiative announced at the 2013 Borlaug Dialogue with former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Howard G. Buffett – to four young innovators under the age of 40, who will each receive $150,000 in start-up funds to implement market and social entrepreneurship projects to confront hunger, poverty and conflict in Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.
The DuPont Turkey Sustainable Agriculture & Food Summit will focus on food security, the role of sustainable agriculture, and innovative food and nutrition solutions. The event will also feature a special report from The Economist Intelligence Unit on its refreshed Global Food Security Index.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IPFRI) 2020 Policy Consultation & Conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners, and scholars to discuss how resilience can be strengthened for food and nutrition security. The conference will:

This week, a newly expanded research facility at Delmas, South Africa, was unveiled that will serve as the core of the DuPont Africa regional technology center. The technology center is designed to help advance DuPont’s ongoing efforts to accelerate seed product development for Africa’s farmers and help them better manage key agronomic challenges, including pest and disease pressure, climate volatility and nutrient-depleted soils.
Leaders from DuPont were on hand to open the research facility in Delmas, South Africa: Ellen Kullman, DuPont chair and CEO; Ian Hudson, DuPont president Europe, Middle East & Africa; Pamela Chitenhe, Regional Director, DuPont Pioneer Africa; and Paul Schickler, president, DuPont Pioneer.
“Agriculture has a vital role to play in the social and economic security of African countries. We are harnessing DuPont’s global science capabilities and resources to create local solutions that improve productivity for farmers in South Africa and throughout the continent,” said DuPont Chair and Chief Executive Officer Ellen Kullman. “We believe this technology center will be a catalyst for innovation and collaboration to help feed a growing population in Africa and around the world.”
Delmas will serve as the central hub of the regional technology center, which is comprised of a network of existing DuPont Pioneer and Pannar research facilities and testing locations throughout Africa.

Recently, DuPont Pioneer opened a unique research center in Chiapas State, Mexico. This is the first center of its kind in the region focused on increasing agricultural production, developing hybrid maize seeds for 12 countries with tropical climates similar to Mexico, such as Colombia, Venezuela and Central America.
During the event, Luis Rebollar, president of DuPont Mexico, Central America and Caribbean, explained that food security is a global challenge that DuPont is using its scientific capabilities to address. With the center, Pioneer is seeking solutions to the specific needs of unique agricultural environments not only in Mexico, but worldwide.
In his remarks, Ricardo García de Alba, Pioneer Latin America North director, also highlighted the importance of food security. Adding that the development of hybrid seeds will help increase productivity in maize in the future, further focusing a commitment to provide food security to more than 100 million Mexicans.

Over the course of the next week, a science blog will host an interactive interview online with Dr. Marc Albertsen, DuPont Pioneer research director, about efforts underway to enhance sorghum with key nutrients – Pro Vitamin A, iron and zinc – as a part of the DuPont-supported Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) Initiative.
The Biofortified Blog, is inviting people to submit questions related to the biofortification of sorghum and ABS by Feb 12. Questions will be answered by Dr. Albertsen and posted the following week.
Dr. Albertsen is the research lead and principal investigator for the Africa Biofortified Sorghum Project, a public-private partnership that is actively working to improve the health and survival of millions of people who rely on sorghum as their primary diet by enhancing its nutritional quality through biofortification. The immediate target of the ABS initiative is to increase and stabilize levels of pro-vitamin A. In the near future, the focus will expand to achieving enhanced bioavailability of zinc and iron and improved protein digestibility.
Based on conservative estimates, currently achievable biofortified sorghum has the potential to contribute from 35 to 60 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin A for children in Africa. DuPont Pioneer provides technical, monetary and in-kind support to the ABS initiative.
