The Economist Intelligence Unit will conduct an interactive workshop to explore the Global Food Security Index (http://foodsecurityindex.eiu.com/), a unique tool sponsored by DuPont, that considers the underlying drivers of food security in 105 countries worldwide. Leo Abruzzese, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s editorial director, will present an overview of the Global Food Security Index model and demonstrate to participants ways in which the model can be used in their own work and research. Partnerships & Priorities: Transforming the Global Food Security Agenda
With the pressing environmental and demographic challenges facing a hungry world, we have seen a growing push toward international collaboration between institutions, disciplines, public and private sectors and countries. The 2012 Borlaug Dialogue will highlight the role of partnerships and their importance in confronting hunger challenges by driving forward cutting edge research and application at the intersection of science, education and enterprise.
The “Partnerships and Priorities” theme will ask several critical questions:
- What are some of the lessons learned from past partnerships?
- Where do we want to be and how do we best leverage partnerships to get there?
- How is the traditional food security agenda being transformed with new models of collaboration around the world?

The Iowa Hunger Summit seeks to gather leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other individuals and groups that lead or participate in projects to confront hunger.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, an expert panel will discuss the findings of the Price Adjustment Factor, an interactive tool that presents a new level of insight into the potential impact of food price fluctuations on the ability to address food security at the local level. Commissioned by DuPont and created by the EIU, the Price Adjustment Factor of the Global Food Security Index captures the impact of changing food prices and other macroeconomic considerations over time in 105 countries, on a country by country basis.

(Originally published Oct. 17, 2013 – Des Moines Register) In the midst of many competing global priorities, the World Food Prize, held annually in Iowa, serves to remind us of the importance of ensuring global food and nutrition security. In the spirit of Norman E. Borlaug, the event brings together experts from many disciplines from around the world to support a common goal — improving the quality, quantity and availability of food across the world.
Never before has this goal been so important to the safety and security of our planet. By 2050, the globe will have 2.4 billion more mouths to feed, with the population exceeding 9½ billion. We must achieve this in the face of huge challenges, including limited resources (land and water), urbanization, climate change and volatile food prices.
Consider that we are not fully meeting the goal today with the over 7 billion people. Even with today’s abundance, nearly 1 billion people are undernourished and fully one-fourth of the world’s children will be stunted for the rest of their lives due to deficiencies of micronutrients. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies cost some 2 to 3 percent of the global gross domestic product.
The economic and human toll of hunger and malnutrition not only affects those countries that are food and nutrition insecure but the global economy as well. Productivity losses due to a malnourished workforce hamper countries’ ability to strengthen their economies and participate in international trade.

DuPont has been honored by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), an agency of the Department of Commerce, for its research efforts to improve nutrition, production and availability of sorghum, a staple crop in Africa. The USPTO Patents for Humanity is an awards competition to recognize patented technologies that address humanitarian needs.
The award affirms DuPont’s commitments to the importance of collaboration and innovation in science, the importance of seeking food security solutions for a growing world population, and the role of patents and intellectual property in encouraging continued investment in science-based research.
“This award recognizes the importance of collaboration across the public and private sectors to bring real solutions to the people and places that need it most,” said DuPont Pioneer President Paul Schickler. “Science must be at the heart of solutions to feeding a growing population.”
In Africa, each year up to half a million children become blind from vitamin A deficiencies and nearly 600,000 women die from childbirth-related causes, many from complications that could be reduced through better provision of vitamin A, iron or zinc. Nearly 300 million people in Africa depend on sorghum as a staple crop, but do not have access to another staple that provides the essential nutrients that sorghum lacks.
DuPont established collaborations with a number of organizations, including Africa Harvest Foundation International, the primary coordinating organization for the Africa Biofortified Sorghum (ABS) initiative, to increase the amount and stability of pro-vitamin A, iron and zinc, and improve protein digestibility of sorghum. In the next several years, the ABS initiative is expected to benefit millions of Africans that rely upon sorghum, which traditionally is deficient in key nutrients.
