On Wed., Oct 15, the World Food Prize convenes its 2014 Borlaug Dialogue, an international symposium that brings together leaders from around the world in Des Moines, Iowa. This year, the Dialogue is addressing, The Greatest Challenge in Human History: Can We Sustainably Feed the 9 Billion People on Our Planet by Year 2050?
The 2014 Borlaug Centennial Laureate is Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram.
Discussion topics will include:
- Taking stock of where we currently stand in meeting the “greatest challenge in human history”;
- Closing yield gaps while addressing pressing water, gender and nutrition challenges and disparities;
- The role of information technology and data to increase productivity, conserve the environment, adapt to climate volatility and consumer needs, and improve the lives of farmers and other participants along the value chain;
- Sustainable intensification to improve productivity with a special focus on soils and fertilizers;
- Innovations in insurance and agrofinancing;

A highlight on Thursday, Oct. 16, is the awarding of the 40 Chances Fellowships – the special initiative announced at the 2013 Borlaug Dialogue with former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Howard G. Buffett – to four young innovators under the age of 40, who will each receive $150,000 in start-up funds to implement market and social entrepreneurship projects to confront hunger, poverty and conflict in Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.
The DuPont Turkey Sustainable Agriculture & Food Summit will focus on food security, the role of sustainable agriculture, and innovative food and nutrition solutions. The event will also feature a special report from The Economist Intelligence Unit on its refreshed Global Food Security Index.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IPFRI) 2020 Policy Consultation & Conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners, and scholars to discuss how resilience can be strengthened for food and nutrition security. The conference will:

Global Harvest Initiative’s 2014 GAP Report® Highlights Obstacles to Meeting Needs of 9 Billion People in 2050
If the latest trend continues, the world may not be able to sustainably supply enough food and other agricultural goods to meet exponentially growing demand during the next three decades. Today, the Global Harvest Initiative (GHI) announced that stark reality as it released its fifth annual Global Agricultural Productivity Report® (GAP Report®) at the World Food Prize Symposium. The GAP Index™ is an annual snapshot of agricultural productivity growth measured against growth in global population and food demand. The report notes that for the first time in several years — global agricultural productivity is not accelerating fast enough to meet the expected agricultural demand by 2050 through sustainable practices.
“This year’s report shows a clear gap that could dramatically impact people all around the globe,” said Dr. Margaret Zeigler, executive director of GHI. ”Raising productivity across all regions and for farmers of any size and scale requires long-term investments and sustained focus if we are going to have sufficient nutritious and affordable food and agriculture.” Zeigler continued, “To realize the promise of new global revolutions in agriculture, we need greater investment in agricultural research and development, better trade agreements for facilitation of global and regional trade in agriculture, and a commitment to apply information and science-based technologies. We must also promote the empowerment of women in society and in agricultural production, as their contributions will be key to lifting up the nutritional status of the next generation.”

Lystra Antoine, global director, Sustainable Agriculture Development at DuPont, recently joined the Global Harvest Initiative (GHI) Board of Directors. GHI is the first private-sector organization to undertake the challenge of sustainably increasing agricultural productivity to meet the needs of over nine billion people by 2050. GHI members include DuPont, John Deere, Monsanto and IBM. GHI believes the right policies can improve global food and nutrition security, accelerate productivity gains, and conserve natural resources.
Each year GHI releases its cornerstone Global Agricultural Productivity Report™ (GAP Report™), which measures the yearly progress agriculture is making to feed the world. GHI works closely with the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Farm Foundation to develop this report.

Recently, the Global Harvest Initiative (GHI) released a report, The Next Global Breadbasket: How Latin America Can Feed the World, which reviews the potential of increasing sustainable ag in the region.
In the report, GHI in partnership with the Inter-American Development Bank, outlines the potential that exists across the Latin America and the Caribbean region for a more productive and environmentally sustainable ag system, the obstacles and challenges that stand in the way of realizing that potential, and how private and public sectors can move forward together.
Included in the paper, how DuPont is working with smallholder dairy farmers in Latin America to reduce milk waste at dairy farms and to help them produce quality cheese more consistently and hygienically. DuPont™ Danisco® Marschall® brand rennet is a complex enzyme in a simple tablet form that modifies milk protein to form a curd and make cheese. Local DuPont employees work collaboratively with Latin American farmers to implement this technology on their smallholder operations to bring stability and profitability to rural regions.
