The Economist Intelligence Unit will conduct an interactive workshop to explore the Global Food Security Index (http://foodsecurityindex.eiu.com/), a unique tool sponsored by DuPont, that considers the underlying drivers of food security in 105 countries worldwide. Leo Abruzzese, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s editorial director, will present an overview of the Global Food Security Index model and demonstrate to participants ways in which the model can be used in their own work and research. Partnerships & Priorities: Transforming the Global Food Security Agenda
With the pressing environmental and demographic challenges facing a hungry world, we have seen a growing push toward international collaboration between institutions, disciplines, public and private sectors and countries. The 2012 Borlaug Dialogue will highlight the role of partnerships and their importance in confronting hunger challenges by driving forward cutting edge research and application at the intersection of science, education and enterprise.
The “Partnerships and Priorities” theme will ask several critical questions:
- What are some of the lessons learned from past partnerships?
- Where do we want to be and how do we best leverage partnerships to get there?
- How is the traditional food security agenda being transformed with new models of collaboration around the world?

The Iowa Hunger Summit seeks to gather leaders from across Iowa representing community organizations, business and industry, state and local government, social agencies, churches and religious communities, schools and universities, and other individuals and groups that lead or participate in projects to confront hunger.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, an expert panel will discuss the findings of the Price Adjustment Factor, an interactive tool that presents a new level of insight into the potential impact of food price fluctuations on the ability to address food security at the local level. Commissioned by DuPont and created by the EIU, the Price Adjustment Factor of the Global Food Security Index captures the impact of changing food prices and other macroeconomic considerations over time in 105 countries, on a country by country basis.

On May 17, DuPont opened a state-of-the-art seed processing plant and large capacity storage warehouse at Menagasha, Ethiopia, to meet the increasing demand for Pioneer® brand seed.
This is the first project evolving from DuPont collaborative initiatives in Ethiopia that will help boost maize productivity among smallholder farmers and help increase food production for local communities. The investment will total more than U.S. $4 million over the next three years.
“DuPont is committed to collaboratively tackling global food security challenges and we are honored to work with USAID (United States Agency for International Development) and the government of Ethiopia to significantly increase productivity for maize farmers here,” said DuPont Executive Vice President James Borel, during the DuPont Pioneer seed production plant opening in Menagesha.
DuPont is collaborating with the Government of Ethiopia and USAID to advance the agricultural development and food security goals set by the Government of Ethiopia. This collaboration, termed the Advanced Maize Seed Adoption Program (AMSAP), will provide sample seed to demonstration plots and field training sessions. It will also build a network of farmer dealers and the current cooperatives to advance the use and acceptance of high-quality inputs and production techniques. The AMSAP also includes the facilitation of credit and grants for the construction of seed and post-harvest storage facilities.
Malnutrition is a significant threat to children around the world who do not have proper access to nutritious food. In fact, the World Health Organization claims that malnutrition is the world’s greatest threat to public health. This condition starves the body’s ability to repair itself and greatly increases the risk of infection and disease. According to a report by UNICEF, almost 20 million children under the age of five suffer from severe acute malnutrition, which accounts for over one million deaths in children each year. To address this major global crisis, DuPont is working with UNICEF to feed malnourished children in countries like Sudan with “Ready-to-Eat Therapeutic Food”. This high-protein peanut-based paste does not require water and is delivered in a ready-to-use packet. Made with DuPont emulsifier technology that prevents oiling to provide a longer product shelf life, UNICEF has delivered ready-to-use food to hundreds of thousands of children in Sudan and other countries around the world.
