Partnerships & Priorities: Transforming the Global Food Security Agenda
With the pressing environmental and demographic challenges facing a hungry world, we have seen a growing push toward international collaboration between institutions, disciplines, public and private sectors and countries. The 2012 Borlaug Dialogue will highlight the role of partnerships and their importance in confronting hunger challenges by driving forward cutting edge research and application at the intersection of science, education and enterprise.
The “Partnerships and Priorities” theme will ask several critical questions:
- What are some of the lessons learned from past partnerships?
- Where do we want to be and how do we best leverage partnerships to get there?
- How is the traditional food security agenda being transformed with new models of collaboration around the world?
Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 17, this three-day dialogue will address the questions above. For the full agenda, schedule of events and a list of speakers, please click here.

This week, a newly expanded research facility at Delmas, South Africa, was unveiled that will serve as the core of the DuPont Africa regional technology center. The technology center is designed to help advance DuPont’s ongoing efforts to accelerate seed product development for Africa’s farmers and help them better manage key agronomic challenges, including pest and disease pressure, climate volatility and nutrient-depleted soils.
“Agriculture has a vital role to play in the social and economic security of African countries. We are harnessing DuPont’s global science capabilities and resources to create local solutions that improve productivity for farmers in South Africa and throughout the continent,” said DuPont Chair and Chief Executive Officer Ellen Kullman. “We believe this technology center will be a catalyst for innovation and collaboration to help feed a growing population in Africa and around the world.”
Delmas will serve as the central hub of the regional technology center, which is comprised of a network of existing DuPont Pioneer and Pannar research facilities and testing locations throughout Africa.
Global consortium of scientists achieve research breakthrough to make sorghum crop more nutritious; will contribute to food and nutrition security
An important step toward introducing pro-vitamin A (beta carotene) into sorghum, a staple food in Africa which is naturally deficient in key nutrients, has been taken. According to a DuPont announcement today, not only has the level of pro-vitamin A been improved to levels that result in delivery of 100 percent of the daily vitamin A requirement in children, but the stability of pro-vitamin A during storage also has been dramatically improved. These research breakthroughs will help improve nutrition for the nearly 300 million people in Africa who depend on sorghum, but who do not have access to another staple that provides the essential nutrients that sorghum lacks.
“Nutrition is the building block of life,” said DuPont Pioneer President Paul E. Schickler. “The achievement of enhancing both the quantity and stability of pro-vitamin A in sorghum marks a critical advancement in ensuring local farmers cannot only grow more food, but more nutritious food.”
The ability to achieve 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A in children from sorghum has never been achieved before.

Previously, DuPont committed to annually host at least two AWARD Fellows in its global laboratories for up to nine months over a four-year period.
The two AWARD Fellows are Felister Mbute Nzuve, from Kenya and Grace Nakabonge, from Uganda. During their two-day visit to Pioneer headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, the Fellows each delivered a presentation focused on their research concentration areas and research attachment experience at DuPont to date. They also met with key leaders and groups across Pioneer.
