World Food Prize 2014 Borlaug Dialogue

On Wed., Oct 15, the World Food Prize convenes its 2014 Borlaug Dialogue, an international symposium that brings together leaders from around the world in Des Moines, Iowa. This year, the Dialogue is addressing, The Greatest Challenge in Human History: Can We Sustainably Feed the 9 Billion People on Our Planet by Year 2050? 

The 2014 Borlaug Centennial Laureate is Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram.

Discussion topics will include:

  • Taking stock of where we currently stand in meeting the “greatest challenge in human history”;
  • Closing yield gaps while addressing pressing water, gender and nutrition challenges and disparities;
  • The role of information technology and data to increase productivity, conserve the environment, adapt to climate volatility and consumer needs, and improve the lives of farmers and other participants along the value chain;
  • Sustainable intensification to improve productivity with a special focus on soils and fertilizers;
  • Innovations in insurance and agrofinancing;
  • And the role of the next generation in the fight against hunger through the DialogueNEXT conversation that features young innovators and thought leaders who are contributing new ideas, concepts and achievements toward this goal.

A highlight on Thursday, Oct. 16, is the awarding of the 40 Chances Fellowships – the special initiative announced at the 2013 Borlaug Dialogue with former Prime Minister Tony Blair and Howard G. Buffett – to four young innovators under the age of 40, who will each receive $150,000 in start-up funds to implement market and social entrepreneurship projects to confront hunger, poverty and conflict in Liberia, Malawi, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.

IFPRI 2020 Conference – Building Resilience for Food and Nutrition Security

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IPFRI) 2020 Policy Consultation & Conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners, and scholars to discuss how resilience can be strengthened for food and nutrition security. The conference will:

  • Articulate an intellectual framework for resilience;
  • Identify key emerging shocks that pose the biggest threats to food and nutrition security, where resilience needs to be significantly strengthened;
  • Assess experiences through case studies and draw out lessons from programs, policies, institutions, and investments around the world;
  • Identify key approaches and tools to build resilience to shocks;
  • Set priorities for action by different actors and in different regions; and
  • Identify knowledge and action gaps in research, policy, and programming that need to be met or scaled up in order to successfully build resilience to food and nutrition insecurity.

Partnerships & Priorities: Transforming the Global Food Security Agenda

With the pressing environmental and demographic challenges facing a hungry world, we have seen a growing push toward international collaboration between institutions, disciplines, public and private sectors and countries. The 2012 Borlaug Dialogue will highlight the role of partnerships and their importance in confronting hunger challenges by driving forward cutting edge research and application at the intersection of science, education and enterprise.

The “Partnerships and Priorities” theme will ask several critical questions:

  • What are some of the lessons learned from past partnerships?
  • Where do we want to be and how do we best leverage partnerships to get there?
  • How is the traditional food security agenda being transformed with new models of collaboration around the world?

The Global Food Security Index’s Price Adjustment Factor Unveiling

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, an expert panel will discuss the findings of the Price Adjustment Factor, an interactive tool that presents a new level of insight into the potential impact of food price fluctuations on the ability to address food security at the local level. Achieving a Food and Nutrition Secure World

Jo Luck, 2010 World Food Prize Laureate, former President of Heifer International and member of the DuPont Advisory Committee on Agricultural Innovation and Productivity, has dedicated her career to ensuring global food security by advocating for smallholder farmers and empowering women. On October 14, the eve of International Day for Rural Women and the opening of the 2014 Borlaug Dialogue, she penned an opinion piece for the Des Moines Register, Empowering Women to Feed the World. In it she discusses the importance of embracing and nurturing the potential of women smallholder farmers in the challenge of food and nutrition security.

Through access to tools, extension services, land and capital, women can transform the world’s ability to sustainably feed the planet and tackle the full spectrum of malnutrition, which is affecting the lives of so many of our children.

PaulSchickler_WFPPublic Private Partnerships Discussed at Borlaug Dialogue

At day two of the 2014 Borlaug Dialogue, DuPont Pioneer President, Paul Schickler participated in a panel discussion, Focus on Africa, Policy and Partnerships.

A dynamic discussion followed brief remarks by Birtukan Dagnachew, a smallholder farmer from Ethiopia. Public-private-partnerships was a consistent theme of the panel.

In his remarks, Schickler emphasized education, partnerships and investment to promote agricultural productivity and development in Africa.

When asked about DuPont Pioneer partnerships and efforts in the region, he highlighted the Advanced Maize Seed Adoption Program (AMSAP), a collaboration with the government of Ethiopia and USAID to advance the agricultural development and food security goals set by the government of Ethiopia; a project with the National 4-H Council to strengthen youth development in rural African communities; and the establishment of a research hub in Delmas, South Africa for advanced seed breeding.

Schickler further emphasized that collaboration with smallholder farmers is crucial to improve agriculture productivity and livelihoods, saying that Pioneer can learn as much from local communities as people can learn from Pioneer in terms in global science and technology.

Agricultural Investment Spurs Economic Growth, Nigeria

Over the past 50 years, Nigeria has transitioned from strong agricultural producer to a leading importer of food. In order to address the needs of its growing population, Nigeria began investing in its agricultural infrastructure through market  driven initiatives. These efforts will save $254 billion Naira yearly, while creating millions of new jobs. Game Changer for Global Food Security in Africa, Sanchez OpEd

Pedro A. Sanchez,  a member of the DuPont Advisory Committee on Agriculture Innovation and Productivity, penned an oped for The Hill. An excerpt:

We are all too familiar with the many obstacles standing in the way of feeding the world by 2050, while facing both undernutrition and escalating rates of overnutrition. In fact, often times the challenge seems quite daunting. But, despite the global food and nutrition security challenge we’re facing, I’m hopeful.

I’m hopeful about our progress and the direction we’re headed. But, I’m most hopeful about untapping Africa’s tremendous potential to curb global hunger and poverty – it’s a game changer.

Sanchez serves as director of the Agriculture and Food Security Center at Columbia University’s Earth Institute. He is the 2002 World Food Prize laureate, a 2004 MacArthur Fellow, and was elected as member of the National Academy of Science in 2012. He was co-chair of the United Nations Millennium Project Hunger Task Force and director of the Millennium Villages Project from 2004 to 2010.
