Supporting the American Seed Trade Association’s Mission

DuPont Pioneer is a sponsoring member of ASTA – the American Seed Trade Association. Founded in 1883, ASTA represents more than 700 companies involved in seed production, plant breeding and related industries in North America. ASTA is a voice of action in matters concerning the development, marketing and movement of seed, associated products and services throughout the world.

Recent news from ASTA highlight the important roles played by current and former Pioneer employees.

Jerry Flint to serve on ASTA leadership team

During its recent annual convention, American Seed Trade Association (ASTA) members elected the organization’s 2017-18 leadership team. Jerry Flint, DuPont Pioneer Vice President, Industry Affairs and Regulatory, was elected as the Associations’ first vice chair.

Flint brings to his role at ASTA more than 20 years of experience in the biotechnology crop cultivation industry where he has made a special effort to bring together growers, scientists and others throughout the agriculture industry to bring new technology to market. He was previously ASTA’s second vice chair.

Stephen Smith honored

Also at the ASTA annual convention on June 23, Stephen Smith, retired Pioneer Research Fellow, and current Affiliate Professor of Agronomy at Iowa State University, was honored with a Lifetime Membership Award.

“Dr. Smith has been an ardent supporter of ASTA’s activities on the domestic and international levels for over 20 years,” said ASTA Chair Mark Herrmann. “He is known worldwide, well respected and deeply committed to the seed industry. An unfailing volunteer, a tireless worker and an unrelenting defender and advocate of intellectual property rights, he has traveled the country and the world attending meetings, giving speeches, organizing symposia and other activities related to intellectual property, germplasm protection and breeding for the seed industry. Respected by his colleagues in industry and government, domestically and internationally, he has become a ‘go to’ person in the industry on seed intellectual property.”

Smith has served on intellectual property committees for ASTA and the Biotechnology Industry Organization. He also chairs the International Seed Federation (ISF) Intellectual Property Committee.

Keri Carstens featured in new video

A new video is now available about Planter Demo Day, a project organized to help growers learn how agriculture innovations, including seed treatments, contribute to sustainability. The Planter Demo Day project is hosted by ASTA, the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, and the National Corn Growers Association. The video features Keri Carstens, DuPont Pioneer Senior Manager, Integrated Product Research and Stewardship, sharing information about Pioneer’s process for evaluating seed treatments. The process is called PASSER – plantability, application, seed safety, stewardship, efficacy and regulatory. Watch the video.
