An Abundant Mix of Ingredients, USA Day at Expo Milano

Each day during Expo Milano 2015, a different country is highlighted. The USA National Day is July 4, the nation’s 239th birthday. To celebrate, the USA Pavilion has planned a day’s worth of special activities for Expo attendees including a flag raising, military color guard and a parade featuring the University of Southern California Trojan marching band. Diverse population, diverse cuisine

The population of the United States is a rich and varied blend of peoples, cultures and religions, and this diversity is reflected in the country’s cuisine. Each new wave of immigrants has added their own culinary preferences and traditions, often adapting them to the techniques and ingredients prevalent in their new country. Food styles also vary across the country, with each state and region having its own specialties.

Agriculture in the United States

There are about 2.2 million farms in the U.S. that help make it the world’s largest producer of corn, bringing in 14.2 billion bushels in 2014. Soybeans are the second most important crop to the country, with record production 3.97 billion bushels last year.

Global Food Security Index results

The United States is ranked first out of the 109 countries on the Economist’s Intelligence Unit’s Global Food Security Index.  Strengths include food consumption as a share of household expenditure, nutritional standards, presence of food safety net programs, access to financing for farmers, public expenditures on agricultural R&D, and the proportion of the population under the global poverty line.

Higher disposable income, as the U.S. has recovered from the global financial crisis, has reduced the share of household income spent on food and increased food security. However, there is some risk of food price inflation due to a number of factors, including severe drought in the western United States.
